Home remedies to sooth winter ailments

Winter is here and needless to say it is the time of the year when we all get a bout of flu, cold, cough and sore throats. Lately I have been feeling run down and it feels like my body wants to give up. It has been a busy few weeks with exams imminently so I've been trying everything to keep going. I do not like swallowing tablets or bottle medicines so I avoid them at all cost unless it has been prescribed by the doctor. In my house we are all very keen on natural remedies wherever possible. Here are some tips to tackle these minor aliments.

A sore throat occurs as part of your body’s immune response to viral or bacterial. Chamomile tea with honey is the perfect calming agent for a sore throat. Chamomile has components that kill bacteria and works as a painkiller. Chamomile also help to relax the muscles unwind and rest. Add honey to your tea;  a delicious sweetener that is often used in combination with other natural ingredients to soothe a sore throat. In addition to helping fight infection and providing pain relief, honey make remedies taste better.Peppermint tea contains anti-inflammatory compounds and is extremely soothing to the throat. The mint may also slightly numb your throat, thereby relieving pain. You can buy peppermint herbal teas in the supermarket but the homemade one is better. You can also make your own by steeping fresh peppermint leaves in boiling water for three to five minutes, then straining off the leaves.

When you’re congested, the simple act of breathing can be  challenging. Whatever the cause ; allergies, a cold, or the flu. Dealing with congestion can leave you feeling tired and dreary. It is the swelling in your nasal passages which makes it difficult to breathe.There are over-the-counter medications such as decongestants are often used to treat the stuffiness and headache caused by congestion but simple home remedies can also offer natural relief.
Garlic is one of the best home remedies for reducing nasal congestion. Its antiviral and anti fungal properties help fight the respiratory infection causing congestion. Boil two to three garlic cloves in one cup of water. You can also mix in one-half teaspoon of turmeric powder. Drink it daily until the congestion clears. If you are brave enough, eating fresh garlic cloves can also help relieve stuffiness and discomfort.
Steam Inhalation therapy is another popular home remedy for instant relief from nasal congestion. It to clear the congestion and also lubricates the irritated respiratory tract. You can do this maybe twice a day. Add one tablespoon of crushed carom seeds or some eucalyptus oil to boiling water and inhale the steam.You can also add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to boiling water and inhale the steam.
